Five FAQs about Braille
Some of our customers have a good understanding of the range of options available to them in Braille, and the limitations that also exist. But for other people it is a new, confusing subject. Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers...
1. Can Braille be printed double sided?
Yes - we can print Braille either single-sided or double-sided. Double-sided Braille is possible by making the embossed dots on one side of the page fit in between the embossed dots on the other side. We produce double-sided Braille as standard, unless requested otherwise.
2. Can we decrease the size of the Braille to fit more on a page?
The size of standard British Braille cannot be changed. The spacing between the dots in each Braille character and between the individual characters is fixed.
Interestingly, however, Japanese Braille has completely different spacing and is generally smaller.
3. How can I put Braille on the outside of document folders, or on tape and CD cases?
We can emboss Braille on:
- Clear labels - in a wide range of sizes, on rolls or as individual strips
- White labels - with or without print, in a wide range of sizes
(including tape labels)
- Full colour labels - with or without print, in a wide range of sizes.
Any of these options could be used to label folders or other presentation packaging.
4. How can I get Braille on my business cards?
Business cards which combine print and embossed Braille are an increasingly popular way of distinguishing your card from those of your competitors, as well as reaching a whole new target market.
The largest obstacle is the size of Braille itself. As discussed in FAQ 2 above, the spacing and size of the dots used to create a Braille character should not be altered, so less words will fit on a standard size business card in Braille than would fit in print.
A2i recommend having folding business cards to accommodate as much information as possible in Braille (they have twice the space available).
5. Can I have my Braille document laminated?
No! It is surprising how often we are asked this - but if a Braille document was laminated then readers would not be able to feel the dots. If our customers need a surface that they can clean (such as for Braille menus) then we would recommend having the Braille embossed onto our clear adhesive label material. Please see the labels or overlay Braille menus section of our website for more details.
Please contact the staff at A2i if you have any questions about Braille or one of the other formats that we provide - we are always happy to help.
