How to avoid paying VAT … legally

There is a simple, quick and easy way to avoid paying VAT on transcription orders that you place with A2i - simply fill out a form! Read on for details, and for a link to the form.

Our Braille, Large Print and Moon services are usually exempt from VAT because they are zero-rated. However, Daisy, audio and e-text usually have the standard 17.5% VAT rate applied. If you represent a charity, or you are an individual with a disability, you may be eligible for zero-rated VAT, providing you meet certain criteria …

Charities

If you are a charity and think you are eligible for zero-rated VAT, please download the form below, complete it, and return it to A2i by email or post.

To download the VAT charity declaration form, click here: (http://www.a2i.co.uk/VATforms.html or http://www.a2i.co.uk/VATcharity.doc)

Individuals with Disabilities

If you have a disability and think you are eligible for zero-rated VAT, please download the form below, complete it, and return it to A2i by email or post.

To download the VAT Individual declaration form, click here: (http://www.a2i.co.uk/VATforms.html or http://www.a2i.co.uk/VATindividual.doc)

If you are unsure as to whether you are eligible to receive goods or services zero-rated for VAT you should consult your local VAT office before signing the declaration, or view the HMRC website www.hmrc.gov.uk.

More cheap tips to make your reception area accessible.

Last month we gave you some top tips on how to make your reception area more accessible - on a budget - including the positioning of furniture, and using colour contrast effectively. This month we give you some more useful information and ideas:

Once the cheap options discussed last month are implemented, the next steps for your company could include:

Approaching and entering building

  • Make sure all entrances are located and signposted clearly from the street, car park and around the building. (see A2i website for signs)
  • Use tactile surfaces to highlight any steps, stairways or changes in level.
  • Install door entry phones
  • Install doors that are clear, or have viewing panes (these should also be low enough for wheelchair users to see through)
  • Where appropriate use automatic sliding doors in preference to doors that swing or rotate.
  • If you do use swing doors they should have automatic release hold-open devices.
  • Ensure doorways are wide enough to accommodate people in wheelchairs and a person accompanied by an escort or an assistance dog.

Reception

  • Send staff on a disability awareness course
  • Have the entrance and reception or waiting area all on one level if possible.
  • If you cannot have the area all on one level, then install handrails and ramps where appropriate, to help people with mobility and sensory impairments
  • Have an induction loop system installed, with a pictorial sign displayed indicating that it is available.
  • Ensure that loop systems are checked and calibrated on a regular basis and that staff are aware of their use and limitations.
  • Have a textphone installed
  • Have disabled toilets available from the reception area.
