New cures for visual impairments?

Revolutionary new medical procedures have given improved sight to some visually impaired people, and offer hope to many more...

Cure for most common problem
Macular degeneration, when the retina wears out, is the most common form of visual impairment in the West and leaves sufferers with just peripheral vision. This results in problems reading, recognising people and looking at anything close up. However, a 70-year old man with this condition recently had his sight restored by surgeons at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, and the experts hope that this will be a cure for the other 2 million UK sufferers. The procedure involved transferring the patient’s vision from a worn-out part of the retina to a healthier area. Research is continuing to decide the best surgical approach for the future.

No more black and white
Researchers were recently able to give some partially sighted people experience of colour. The break through was made while studying a patient with a damaged visual cortex and trials will continue.
